10 Things I Learned About Moving

The greatest lesson is that we are NEVER doing it again. Specifically, I share our experiences with you in an effort to spare you from ever giving a particular moving truck company a dime of your money.

1) The first weekend of August is apparently the busiest weekend of the year to move. Damn college students.

2) U-Haul is actually capable of overbooking 160 trucks at a time in one day.

3) When calling the U-Haul customer service line, it will take three hours of being on hold before it times out and hangs up on you.

4) If you do get through to a U-Haul customer service representative, getting accidentally disconnected on your cell phone apparently means that you want to cancel the reservation you made three weeks in advance and now desperately need.

5) It takes two and a half hours of waiting on hold after getting disconnected with a U-Haul customer service representative to get in touch with another one, only to learn that your reservation has been canceled.

6) When you push Dennis Knapp, Sr. far enough, he will cuss you out. Especially if you work for U-Haul.

7) Squatting in person at a U-Haul dealership while calling other truck rental places is an incredibly powerful tactic for eventually getting the U-Haul truck you reserved.

8) Friends volunteering to help you move are usually not available to help by the time you get your U-Haul truck at 6 p.m. and load until after midnight.

9) It takes my husband six hours to load all of our belongings single-handedly into a 26’ U-Haul truck.

10) If you are loading a U-Haul truck and pack a baby’s crib before his bedtime, the poor thing will eventually pass out in the middle of the floor in his otherwise empty bedroom.

Do you know that I knew a guy who moved a full-grown, live bull in a U-Haul truck once?

If there ever is a next time, we’re calling movers.

Ah! The art of moving. The memories of driving a Ryder truck across country, twice! We learned that tow dollies can ruin your car..if you don't know how to use them properly. When we got to Indy, we had no car for 3 months! On the way back to CA, we rented a car trailer!
